MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: CHRISTINE BETHEL, PRESIDENT OF THE ILLINOIS DENTAL HYGIENISTS’ ASSOCIATION

12 Jan 2026 11:49 AM | Anonymous

Chris Bethel’s journey in dentistry is a testament to resilience, service, and lifelong learning.  With several decades of experience as a dental hygienist in private practice across five different states, Chris brings a depth of perspective that is both inspiring and grounding.

A fun fact that often surprises colleagues: Chris wasn’t accepted into a dental hygiene program on her first attempt.  Rather than see that as a setback, she pivoted and became a Certified Dental Assistant, launching what would become a long and meaningful career in dentistry.  She began practicing in an era before gloves and masks were the norm, giving her a unique vantage point on just how far the profession has evolved.

Chris has been a lifelong member of the ADHA and is a passionate advocate for professional involvement.  Her message is simple and powerful: “If you support them, they will support you!”  She encourages hygienists at every stage of their careers to join and engage with their professional organizations.

Among the highlights of Chris’ career are mission trips to Nicaragua and Mexico-experiences she describes as incredibly rewarding.  She strongly encourages her colleagues to participate in at least one mission trip during their careers, noting the profound personal and professional impact of serving communities with limited access to care.

At the heart of Chris’ work is a deep appreciation for the relationships she has built with her patients over the years.  She has especially cherished working with patients who have special needs, finding that those connections have been some of the most meaningful of her career.

A firm believer in being a lifelong learner, Chris urges new graduates to attend dental conferences and in-person continuing education whenever possible.  Beyond the education itself, she emphasizes the value of networking and building lasting relationships with colleagues in all realms of the profession.

Chris didn’t set out to become the President of IDHA in the year that she retired.  But when the need arose, she chose to step up and bring her experience, dedication, and leadership into this important role.  As IDHA President, Chris exemplifies service to the profession she loves.

We look forward to seeing where Chris Bethel’s experience, compassion, and leadership will take IDHA in the year ahead!  If you are interested in volunteering for a role in IDHA, you can reach out to Chris directly at idha.president@gmail.com
