This legislation passed out of the 99th General Assembly in July of 2016.
To summarize, a Public Health Dental Hygienist (PHDH) may provide preventive treatment without a prior dental exam to patients who are uninsured or eligible for medicaid in a public health setting. To qualify as a PHDH, the individual must complete 42 clock hours of additional course work approved by the Department. At this time the course work has not been determined.
This proposed legislation was introduced on January 24, 2017 to the 100th General Assembly.
To summarize, this proposed legislation will allow an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) who has completed training to: a) take material or digital final impressions; b) perform pulp vitality test; c) place, pack and finish composite restorations; d) start the flow of oxygen and monitor nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia.
